On June 4, 2025, the COHORTES-MICROBIOMES project published a review titled “The gut microbiome connects nutrition and human health” in Gastroenterology & Hepatology.
The gut microbiota plays an undeniable role in mediating the effects of diet on health. An inadequate diet is a major risk factor and contributes to the onset of diseases. Understanding the multidirectional interactions between the foods we eat, the gut microbiota, and the body’s various organ systems is therefore essential.
In this review, the authors provide an overview of how dietary habits and food intake shape the characteristics of the gut microbiota, and how this knowledge could explain the heterogeneity of dietary responses and support food-based dietary recommendations, as well as medical and precision nutrition.
